In 2016 alone, there were 18,000 car accidents per day. The majority of these car accidents occurred due to recklessness or negligence. Drivers who drive intoxicated, who disregard the rules of the road and who drive distracted can put themselves and others in harm’s way.

Yet, even though the majority of car crashes are caused by driver error, some car models are simply involved in more car accidents than others. According to data from Insurify, over 13% of all models on the road have at least one prior accident. In addition, the cars with the most accidents tend to come from foreign markets, and seven of those models come from Japanese manufacturers.

To determine which car models had the most accidents, data scientists from Insurify pulled data from over 1.6 million car insurance quotes. The number of drivers with an “at-fault” accident from the past seven years was analyzed against the population of drivers who own that particular model.

Top 10 Car Models With the Most Accidents

According to the Insurify data,  ten car models stood out as having the most car accidents in the country.

  1. Subaru Crosstrek – 25.81% had a prior accident
  2. Honda HR-V – 25.7% had a prior accident
  3. Hyundai Elantra GT – 25.58% had a prior accident
  4. Infiniti Q50 – 25.14% had a prior accident
  5. Subaru WRX – 24.9% had a prior accident
  6. Mazda3 – 24.65% had a prior accident
  7. Acura ILX – 24.18% had a prior accident
  8. Lexus CT – 24.17% had a prior accident
  9. Chevrolet Trax – 23.98% had a prior accident
  10. Hyundai Santa Fe Sport – 23.92% had a prior accident

Interestingly, the Subaru Crosstrek, which has the most accidents of any car model, received the highest possible safety rating from the Insurance Institute of Highway Safety in 2019. This means that even though the Crosstrek was involved in more crashes than other cars, vehicle occupants generally sustained less serious injuries due to its safe design.
