“Medical errors are the third leading cause of death in the U.S., after heart disease and cancer, causing at least 250,000 deaths every year,” according to a study from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Despite reform efforts in the health care industry, “10 percent of U.S. deaths annually” are caused by medical error. The researchers “define medical errors as lapses in judgment, skill or coordination of care; mistaken diagnoses; system failures that lead to patient deaths or the failure to rescue dying patients; and preventable complications of care.” To put the numbers in perspective, there are approximately five times more deaths caused by medical errors each year than by car accidents.
